Chapter 12

The instant Joanna tumbled into the passenger’s seat of Harry’s loaner after work, she felt an electricity between herself and Mike that hadn’t been there before she’d kissed his cheek. She shot a glance in Mike’s direction, but he had his gaze firmly fixed on the road as he drove them out of town. Fortunately, Joanna only had to ask, “Did you have a good time today?” and Daisy filled what would have been an awkward silence.

“Sophie and Stephanie look exactly alike!” Daisy burbled. “Except Sophie has a tiny little scar on her chin right here.” Daisy pointed to the center of her chin. “They’re really nice and they have lots of dolls and two older brothers.” She held up two fingers. “We all built a snowman and they have a dog named Rusty and he licked my face and, oh, yeah, they have the very best thing of all.”

Joanna brushed the bangs from Daisy’s brow, reassuring herself that her daughter was here and safe after an afternoon spent apart, and asked, “What’s the very best thing of all?”

“An elf!”

Joanna shot a confused look at Mike. “An elf?”

Before Mike could explain, Daisy continued, “He has bells on his shoes and he moves around at night when you’re asleep and you have to find him every morning. Can we get one?”

Joanna had no idea what Daisy was talking about. “We can discuss it later.”

Daisy’s lips pouted. “That means no.”

“No, it doesn’t,” Joanna protested. “It means I need time to find out a little bit more about it.”

Daisy wasn’t that patient. “Mike, can I have an elf?”

Mike shot Joanna a wry smile and said, “I’ll talk to your mom, and we’ll let you know.”

Joanna was grateful for Mike’s deference, making the decision hers, and at the same time, irritated that Daisy had turned to him rather than accept her answer. She wondered if she was just grouchy because she was frazzled from serving up two thousand pieces of pie. Joanna laughed to herself. Well, somewhere between twenty and two hundred, anyway.

Daisy constantly chattered through dinner, saving Joanna from having to talk to Mike about the elephant in the room.

That kiss.

It was nothing. The simple touch of her lips to his cheek.

It was more than that. It meant something.

What was Mike thinking? Should she say something? Or wait for him to mention it? Or pretend it never happened?

It happened.

The fact that Mike had been trying to catch her gaze all through dinner made it clear that he certainly hadn’t forgotten about it. But there was no way she could say anything—they could discuss anything—until Daisy was in bed.

However, Daisy was so keyed up Joanna realized she was going to have trouble getting her daughter to sleep. A bath helped. A little. By the time Daisy was in pajamas and in bed waiting for a story, Joanna was running on fumes. She’d forgotten how exhausting it was to spend hours on her feet.

Mike had unstacked the twin beds, separating them with an end table that held a lamp in the shape of an Air Force jet.
